Tremors.

I was a part of AMP’s annual 30x30 show, celebrating 30 movies turning 30, with 50+ artists creating new posters for these gems. I chose Tremors because it was a favorite growing up, constantly watching the series with my family and friends. I wanted to reimagine the movie as a more serious sci-fi/horror while still keeping its craziness. They were sold limited edition for 48 hours. Go check out the other submissions too here!

Layout.

I went for a conceptual layout based on seismology. One of the main characters, Rhonda, is a seismology student and the whole film is based around underground creatures terrorizing a small town. So while researching the field I came across what became a major inspiration for the poster, Inge Lehmann.

Inge Lehmann (5/13/1888 – 2/21/1993) was a Danish seismologist and geophysicist. In 1936, she discovered that the Earth has a solid inner core inside a molten outer core.

In 1929 a large earthquake occurred near New Zealand. She studied the shock waves and was puzzled by what she saw. A few P-waves, which should have been deflected by the core, were in fact recorded at seismic stations. Lehmann theorized that these waves had traveled some distance into the core and then bounced off some kind of boundary. Her interpretation of this data was the foundation of a 1936 paper in which she theorized that Earth’s center consisted of two parts: a solid inner core surrounded by a liquid outer core, separated by what has come to be called the Lehmann Discontinuity. Lehmann’s hypothesis was confirmed in 1970 when more sensitive seismographs detected waves deflecting off this solid core.

I used her P-waves equation as the basis for the layout among other iconographic elements in seismology. Let me know what you think!
